What is RIDA Herbal Bitters?
RIDA Herbal Bitters is a non-alcoholic herbal bitters — a herbal liquid supplement made in Nigeria from five West African plant extracts, with twelve vitamins and minerals declared on the carton. It comes in 250 mL and 500 mL bottles and is taken by adults as a short herbal course rather than a permanent daily supplement.
Herbal bitters are one of the oldest formats in West African wellness: strong-tasting plant preparations taken in small measured amounts rather than sipped like a drink. Two things set this one apart from most bitters sold in Nigeria. It is completely alcohol-free, which matters if you avoid alcohol for religious, personal or health reasons. And the carton carries a printed Supplementary Facts panel, so this is a herbal bitters with vitamins and minerals you can actually read off the pack rather than a preparation you have to take on trust.
The blend is built on extracts of Curculigo pilosa, Uvaria chamae, Cucumeropsis mannii, Senna alata and Hunteria umbellata. The carton declares no added colouring or fillers, no alcohol, and no animal products, corn, soy, wheat or yeast. It is manufactured by Marvel Natural Products PLC in Osogbo, Osun State, and carries NAFDAC Reg. No. A7-2791L.
This is a dietary supplement, not a medicine. It is intended to support general health and wellbeing, not to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
What does a non-alcoholic herbal bitters actually do?
It does two separate jobs. The vitamin and mineral panel provides nutrients with established roles in the body. The bitter plant extracts are the traditional herbal element, and one of them acts on the bowel — which is why this is a short-course product. Both are worth understanding before you buy.
From the declared nutrients:
- Thiamine, riboflavin, niacin and vitamin B6 contribute to normal energy-yielding metabolism and to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.
- Vitamin A and vitamin D contribute to normal immune system function.
- Calcium, magnesium, vitamin D and vitamin K contribute to the maintenance of normal bones.
- Magnesium contributes to normal muscle function and normal nervous system function.
- Folate contributes to normal blood formation; biotin and niacin to the maintenance of normal skin and mucous membranes.
From the herbal blend: bitter plant preparations have been used across West Africa for generations. One of the five plants here, Senna alata, contains anthraquinone compounds and belongs to the group classified as stimulant laxatives, meaning it increases activity in the intestine. That is the single most important thing to know about this product, it is why the carton warns against use by anyone already experiencing diarrhoea, and it shapes the guidance throughout this page.
Food supplements should not be used as a substitute for a varied and balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.

What are the ingredients in RIDA Herbal Bitters?
RIDA Herbal Bitters contains extracts of five West African plants: Curculigo pilosa, Uvaria chamae, Cucumeropsis mannii (egusi), Senna alata and Hunteria umbellata. The carton declares the plants but not their quantities, so the descriptions below identify each plant rather than quantify it. Alongside these sit the twelve declared vitamins and minerals listed in the next section.
Curculigo pilosa
A rhizome-forming plant of the Hypoxidaceae family, native across tropical West Africa. Its rhizome has a long record of use in African traditional preparations connected with digestion.
Uvaria chamae
Known in English as bush banana or finger root, and as akisan in Yoruba, mmimi ohia in Igbo and kas kaifi in Hausa. A climbing shrub of the Annonaceae family found across West and Central Africa, with an edible fruit and a long history of use of its root and bark.
Cucumeropsis mannii
This is egusi — the white-seed melon known as agushi in Hausa, egwusi in Igbo and egusi in Yoruba. It is an everyday Nigerian food, ground into soups and stews, and a recognised source of protein, minerals and unsaturated fatty acids. If you have a melon or seed allergy, see the safety section below.
Senna alata
A shrub of the Fabaceae family, widespread in tropical Africa and commonly called the ringworm plant or candle bush. Plants in the Senna genus contain anthraquinone compounds and are classified as stimulant laxatives. Preparations containing them are conventionally used for short periods rather than continuously — the safety section explains what that means in practice.
Hunteria umbellata
A tree of the Apocynaceae family whose dried seeds are known as abere among the Yoruba and are widely used in south-west Nigeria. Published laboratory and animal research has examined its effect on blood glucose, which is directly relevant if you take medication for diabetes.
These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
What are the supplement facts for RIDA Herbal Bitters?
Each serving declares twelve vitamins and minerals. The Amount Per Serving column below is exactly as printed on the 500 mL carton. Because reference intakes differ between markets, we have set the amounts against both the US Daily Value and the EU/UK Nutrient Reference Value, so you can read the panel against whichever applies where you live.
| Nutrient | Amount per serving (as printed) | % US Daily Value (calculated) | % EU/UK NRV (calculated) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vitamin A | 900 mcg | 100% | 112% |
| Vitamin C | 60 mcg | Under 1% | Under 1% |
| Vitamin D | 15 mcg | 75% | 300% |
| Vitamin K | 120 mcg | 100% | 160% |
| Thiamine (B1) | 1.2 mg | 100% | 109% |
| Riboflavin (B2) | 1.3 mg | 100% | 93% |
| Niacin (B3) | 16 mg | 100% | 100% |
| Vitamin B6 | 1.3 mg | 76% | 93% |
| Biotin (B7) | 30 mcg | 100% | 60% |
| Folate (B9) | 400 mcg | 100% | 200% |
| Calcium | 1200 mg | 92% | 150% |
| Magnesium | 400 mg | 95% | 107% |
| Servings per 500 mL bottle | 17.5 (as printed) | — | — |
The percentage columns are our own calculation from the printed amounts, against the US Daily Values and the EU/UK Nutrient Reference Values for adults. Vitamin C is declared on the pack in micrograms, and is shown here exactly as printed.
Two figures are worth pausing on. Calcium is declared at 1200 mg per serving, close to a full adult daily requirement, so it is best not to take another calcium supplement alongside it without a pharmacist’s advice. Magnesium is declared at 400 mg per serving, above the 350 mg per day tolerable upper intake level the US National Institutes of Health sets for supplemental magnesium, where loose stools are the limiting effect (see the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements magnesium fact sheet). Alongside the senna in the blend, that is a good reason to keep to the leaflet dose and to speak to your doctor or pharmacist before starting if you take any medication.

Other label details: 500 mL (16.9 fl oz) and 250 mL sizes; ISO 9001:2015 and Halal marks; NAFDAC Reg. No. A7-2791L; manufactured by Marvel Natural Products PLC, No 12 Amen Street, Lakanre Estate, Ayekale, Ota-Efun, Osogbo, Osun State, and distributed from Ikeja, Lagos. Shake well before use.
How do you take RIDA Herbal Bitters?
Follow the leaflet inside your carton. The manufacturer prints the directions there rather than on the outer pack, which states simply “See inner leaflet” — so the leaflet that arrives with your bottle is your authoritative dose, and it is worth reading before the first serving.
- Use the leaflet dose, starting at the lowest amount it allows, and do not exceed it.
- Shake the bottle well before every use, as the carton instructs.
- Measure each serving with a spoon or measure rather than pouring straight from the bottle. With 400 mg of magnesium per serving, accuracy is worth the extra few seconds.
- Contact us if your leaflet is missing and we will confirm the manufacturer’s directions for you. A dose from a different brand of bitters will not transfer to this one.
How do you get the best from a herbal bitters routine?
Use it as a defined short course, drink plenty of water alongside it, and pair it with real food rather than treating it as a replacement for one. Bitters have always been used this way, and it suits this blend well.
- Keep it to a short course. If you find yourself reaching for it week after week, that is worth raising with a doctor rather than reordering.
- Drink plenty of water while you are using it — the single most useful habit to pair with it.
- Eat well alongside it. Fibre from vegetables, fruit, beans and whole grains does more for comfortable digestion than any bottle will.
- Ease off if you get cramping or loose stools, and speak to a pharmacist if it continues.
- For a gentler everyday format from the same brand, RIDA Herbal Supplement Capsules are a capsule alternative.
Results vary between individuals. Supplements are intended to support a healthy diet and lifestyle, not to replace them.
Who is this herbal bitters for?
- Adults who already use herbal bitters and want a NAFDAC-registered pack with a printed nutrient panel.
- Adults who avoid alcohol and want a non-alcoholic, Halal-marked option.
- People who prefer a liquid supplement to capsules or tablets.
- Nigerians abroad wanting a familiar West African preparation with a traceable manufacturer, shipped by DHL.
What should you know before taking RIDA Herbal Bitters?
Because of the senna content and the declared magnesium level, this product has more specific precautions than a standard multivitamin. Please read this section before ordering.
Do not use this product if you are:
- Pregnant or breastfeeding. The carton excludes both, and the vitamin A content is a further reason to avoid it.
- Experiencing diarrhoea or loose stools. Printed on the carton, and both the senna and the declared magnesium would make it worse.
- Under 18. Recs-Medix supplies this product to adults only.
Speak to a doctor or pharmacist before using it if you:
- Have any bowel condition — inflammatory bowel disease, a known or suspected obstruction, or abdominal pain that has not been diagnosed. Abdominal pain with vomiting needs medical assessment rather than a herbal preparation. A published review of senna laxative safety sets out why preparations of this type are used short-term and why prolonged use is associated with electrolyte disturbance, including low potassium.
- Take medication for diabetes, particularly insulin or a sulfonylurea. Research on Hunteria umbellata has examined effects on blood glucose, so combining it with glucose-lowering medication warrants medical supervision and closer monitoring.
- Take digoxin, warfarin, diuretics or corticosteroids. Where a stimulant laxative lowers potassium, as the review above describes, that can affect how these medicines behave.
- Have kidney disease or a heart condition, given the calcium and magnesium declared per serving.
- Take any other calcium or magnesium supplement, so that you are not doubling up.
- Have a known allergy to melon or seeds — the blend contains egusi — or to any of the other four plants listed.
- Have any long-term medical condition, or take prescription medication of any kind.
Stop using it and seek advice if you experience persistent cramping, diarrhoea, dizziness or any allergic reaction. Always consult a qualified healthcare professional before starting a new supplement.
These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
What does RIDA Herbal Bitters not do?
- It is not a medicine and cannot replace prescription medication. Do not stop, delay or reduce any prescribed medicine in order to take it.
- It does not treat, cure or prevent any disease, infection or medical condition.
- It is not an antibiotic, an antifungal, or a treatment for any respiratory condition.
- It is not a weight-loss product, and no weight claim appears on its label.
- It is not a substitute for a varied diet, water, sleep or physical activity.
- It is not intended for continuous long-term daily use.
How should you store RIDA Herbal Bitters?
- Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C, as printed on the carton.
- Keep away from direct sunlight and heat — not on a windowsill or above a cooker.
- Close the cap tightly after every use, and shake well before the next.
- Keep out of the reach of children.
- Check the expiry date printed on the carton before use.
What will you receive when you order?
You will receive one factory-sealed bottle in its printed carton, in the size you select — 250 mL or 500 mL. Choose your size from the Quantity option above and the price updates to match.
The carton is green and red, with the RIDA logo on the front and the line “A perfect blend of the finest herb and root extracts”. The side panels carry the Supplementary Facts, the full ingredient list, the caution and storage text, the manufacturer and distributor details, and NAFDAC Reg. No. A7-2791L above the barcode. ISO 9001:2015 and Halal marks are printed at the base of the panel. The top of the carton states that you should not buy the product if the seal is broken, so check yours is intact on arrival.

Frequently asked questions about RIDA Herbal Bitters
Is RIDA Herbal Bitters alcoholic?
No. The carton states plainly that the product contains no alcohol, which is unusual among herbal bitters and is the main reason many customers choose it. The pack also carries a Halal mark.
What is RIDA Herbal Bitters used for?
Adults use it as a general wellness preparation. It provides twelve declared vitamins and minerals per serving alongside five West African plant extracts. It is not intended for any medical condition and does not treat, cure or prevent disease.
Can I take RIDA Herbal Bitters every day, long term?
It is not designed for that. The blend contains Senna alata, and preparations containing plants of this type are conventionally used for short periods rather than continuously. Follow the leaflet in your carton, and speak to a doctor if you feel you need it regularly.
How much should I take?
Follow the leaflet packed inside your carton — that is where the manufacturer prints the dose, and the outer pack points you to it. If your leaflet is missing, contact us and we will confirm the directions before you take your first serving.
Is RIDA Herbal Bitters NAFDAC registered?
Yes. NAFDAC Reg. No. A7-2791L is printed on the carton directly above the barcode. Registration confirms the product has been through NAFDAC’s regulatory process; it is not an endorsement of any health benefit.
Who should not take RIDA Herbal Bitters?
The carton excludes pregnant women, nursing mothers and anyone experiencing diarrhoea, and Recs-Medix supplies it to adults over 18 only. If you take medication for diabetes, digoxin, warfarin or diuretics, or have any bowel condition, speak to a pharmacist first.
What is the difference between the 250 mL and 500 mL bottles?
Only the volume and the price. The formula is the same, and the 500 mL bottle carries roughly twice as many servings. Select your size in the Quantity option above.
Do you ship RIDA Herbal Bitters internationally?
Yes, by DHL Express to the USA, UK, Canada, the EU and Australia, typically within 3 to 5 business days. Customers outside Nigeria should check their own country’s rules on importing herbal products before ordering.
